Understanding the World

Understanding the world involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

This term, we have been investigating forces make things move, change shape and balance. Here we are using the gutters and stands to build slopes and ramps for the balls. We explored what happened when we added water and changed the heights and directions of the stands.

We visited our beautiful forest and talked about the rules that we would need to follow to keep us happy and safe while in this area. We were able to identify some of the flowers, trees and plants growing there, for example, brambles, apple trees, oak trees and irises.

Here we are taking care of God’s wonderful world by tidying and preparing the allotment for winter.

We talked about the special people in our families and how our families are all different. How many people are in your family?

Using clay to explore forces.

We found apples growing in our beautiful forest. We harvested as many as we could and we used them to make a delicious apple crumble.

Here we are sorting materials for recycling.

We recycled some of our waste paper by making new paper!

This term we are learning about different celebrations from around the world. This week, we learnt about how Carnival is celebrated in Trinidad and Tobago and we made a delicious Trinidadian pepper roti.

To celebrate Carnival we made headdresses and played the ‘steel drums’ in our own parade.

The children have been fascinated by the autumnal leaves. Here we are exploring all the beautiful colours.

As Halloween approaches, the children have been using their senses to investigate pumpkins. What do they feel like? What do you think will be inside? Do you like the smell?

To celebrate Diwali, we used clay to make diva lamps.

We created Rangoli patterns outside to welcome visitors and bring good luck.

We took part in a non-uniform day and decorated spotty biscuits to show our support for one of our chosen charities, Children in Need.

We talked about the route we would take around school to get to the Forest School. We drew a map and marked off the key features on the way.

The cold weather is on the way. The children were curious to see if the pond had frozen over. We talked about what happens to water when it gets cold and how it freezes. We talked about how to stay safe near frozen water.

 Christmas party!!!

Today we had a very special visitor. Thank you for coming to see us Santa. Merry Christmas to all our families!
