Phonics - Letters and Sounds
At St Bede's Nursery phonics is taught daily, through play based activities. We follow the Letters and Sounds Phonics Programme. Letters and Sounds is a phonics resource that aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills. What Are Phonics Phases?
Phases are the way the letters and sounds are broken down to teach sounds in a certain order.
Phase One - Nursery
Activities are divided into seven aspects;
Aspect 1: Environmental Sounds
Aspect 2: Instrumental Sounds
Aspect 3: Body Sounds
Aspect 4: Rhythm and Rhyme
Aspect 5: Alliteration
Aspect 6: Voice Sounds
Aspect 7: Oral blending and Segmenting.

Phase Two - Nursery/Reception
Learning 19 letters of the alphabet and one sound for each. Blending sounds together to make words. Segmenting words into their separate sounds. Beginning to read simple captions.
