Unit 1 - Family
The Family Loving unit in Year 6 of the Come and See RE program teaches the importance of love in family life and how it reflects God's love. We learn that love involves caring, forgiving, and making sacrifices for others. We also explore how the Holy Trinity is a model of perfect love and unity. Through Bible stories, prayers, and reflections, we are encouraged to think about how love shapes our relationships with family and others.
In this lesson, pupils wrote their own prayer, litany, or psalm in the style of Psalm 136, praising and thanking God for His love and care. They reflected on God's constant presence and unconditional love, just as the psalmist repeats, "His love endures forever." Pupils were encouraged to think about specific examples of God's care in their own lives and the world around them. By writing their prayers, they expressed gratitude for God's protection, forgiveness, and guidance, deepening their understanding of how God's love endures in every aspect of life.
In this lesson, children wrote a letter to Paul, thanking him for his letter to the people in Crete and reflecting on how its message encouraged and shaped their lives. They explored how Paul’s teachings about God’s unconditional love, forgiveness, and living a good Christian life inspired the Cretans to be kinder, more forgiving, and faithful. Pupils then considered how Paul's message remains relevant today, shaping our lives by reminding us to show love and compassion, forgive others, and live according to Christian values in modern society.
In this lesson on the Parable of the Prodigal Son, we staged a courtroom to explore which characters showed unconditional love. Pupils took on different roles, presenting evidence and arguments for the father, son, and brother's actions. Through this role-play, they examined how the father showed unconditional love by forgiving and welcoming his son back, while the son and brother's actions were also analysed. This activity helped children understand the concept of forgiveness and love without limits, linking it to God's unconditional love for everyone.
