As part of this first half term we have been concentration on animals as our Science topic. The children started by exploring and identifying that animals have offspring that turn into adults. The children were able to match animals to their offspring and we learnt that some animals give birth to live young while others lay eggs.
We then moved on to look at how those offspring grow into adults and looked at animal life cycles. We observed video clips of timelapsed life cycles and uses these observations to create life cycles for different animals.
We then moved on to consider what these animals need to survive. We discussed how some animals are looked after and they are helped to survive, where other animals need to ensure their own survival. We started to identify the difference between what animals might need for survival and what animals might want to have a comfortable life.
The children created pet guides to explain to someone what their animal would need if they looked after them, and what they might want.
