Phonics

At St Bede's we  follow the `Letters and Sounds' programme. Letters and Sounds is a phonics programmes published by the Department of Education and Skills in 2007. It aims to build childrens speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonics knowledge and skills. It sets out a systematic programme  for teaching phonics skills for children starting at the age of five, with them becoming fluent readers by age seven.

The phases.

Phonics is broken down into 6 phases - each phase has a different focus. In Year 1 your child will be taught Phase 5 and will be recapping phase 2,3,4 through phonics lessons , games, reading. Phase 5 helps children to broaden their knowledge of  graphemes and phonemes for use in reading and spelling.
