KS1 Reading Scheme

Reading Schemes

At St Bede's it is our aim to develop enthusiastic and confident readers who can understand a wide range of texts. As a result, we use a range of reading schemes within our school as we believe that breadth of reading is important.

One of our main Reading Schemes is Oxford Reading Tree. It is a Character led sequence of books which follow the lives and adventures of the central characters Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy. The initial levels are phonetically structured.  The controlled vocabulary increasingly introduces more complex vocabulary as the scheme progresses. The adventures and predicaments that the central characters find themselves in allow the reader to think about and engage with the characters and ask questions about the stories.

Some of the other reading schemes we use are Rigby, Collins Big Cat, Project X and Treetops.

Parental support is extremely important as children learn to read, so we do ask parents to read each evening with their children.
