St Bede's Catholic Primary School

Phonics

At St Bede’s Catholic Primary School, we believe that learning to read is one of the most important foundations of a child’s education. Through the teaching of phonics using the Essential Letters and Sounds programme, we give our children the essential building blocks they need to become confident, fluent readers and writers. Phonics is taught in a structured and systematic way, enabling pupils to develop secure knowledge of sounds, blending and segmenting skills.

Rooted in our Catholic ethos, we recognise that the ability to read opens the door not only to academic success, but also to a deeper understanding of the world, of Scripture and of God’s word. On this page, you will find key information about how phonics is taught at St Bede’s, including our approach, progression and ways in which families can support learning at home.
