Forest School

We are incredibly fortunate to have beautiful, extensive school grounds and our very own on-site Forest School area, complete with a wonderful pond and natural woodland environment. Our outdoor space provides the perfect setting for children to explore, discover and learn in a hands-on and meaningful way.

Led by our dedicated Forest School Lead, Miss Hill, our children experience Forest School throughout the school year and across the changing seasons. This allows them to witness the wonder of God’s creation as it changes – from autumn leaves and winter frost to new life in spring and the rich abundance of summer wildlife. Through these experiences, children develop a deep understanding of and respect for the natural world.

As a Catholic school, our Forest School provision is rooted in our faith. Inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato Si’, we recognise our responsibility to care for our common home. We teach our children that the world is a gift from God and that we are called to be good stewards of creation. Forest School provides a living classroom where children can understand this message in a meaningful and practical way.

At our school, we believe Forest School is not simply an outdoor lesson – it is a vital part of our curriculum and our mission. It offers opportunities for children to take managed risks, solve problems, work collaboratively and grow in independence. Through activities such as den building, pond dipping, safe tool use, fire lighting, nature art and wildlife exploration, children develop resilience, confidence and creativity.

Forest School nurtures the whole child – academically, physically, spiritually and emotionally. It strengthens physical development through climbing, balancing and exploring natural terrain. It enhances communication and teamwork as children plan, create and reflect together. It promotes wellbeing by giving children time to slow down, be present in nature and experience the peace and awe that comes from being immersed in God’s creation.

We value Forest School because it:

  • Builds confidence and self-esteem

  • Encourages independence and resilience

  • Develops problem-solving and critical thinking skills

  • Promotes teamwork and communication

  • Enhances physical development

  • Supports emotional and spiritual wellbeing

  • Fosters a lifelong love and respect for God’s creation

  • Encourages responsible stewardship of the world

We see first-hand how Forest School enables our children to flourish. The sense of achievement when a child masters a new skill, the curiosity sparked by discovering pond life, and the pride shown in caring for our environment all reflect our commitment to forming thoughtful, compassionate stewards of the Earth.

Forest School is a cherished and important part of life at our school. It helps our children to grow not only as learners, but as responsible citizens and faithful stewards, inspired to care for our common home today and in the future.
