Today we took our learning outdoors!
Today we had a visit from Mr Cranshaw and his cows. The children asked some great questions and even got to stroke them!
Today we have started our learning on The Human Body. We have been working in pairs to draw around each other and label common body parts.
This week we have started our new topic 'Robots'. We have written letters to Robot Land asking for a robot to help us with things we struggle with or don't particularly like doing! We then decided to make our own robots out of scrap materials. To this, we first had to plan what our robot would look like, then make it, then evaluate our product. Please have a look at the photos below.
Year One have had so much fun today learning outdoors in our Forest School. We have made tree cookies, taken part in a scavenger hunt and played lots of team games to develop our listening skills in the outdoors. Please have a look at the photos!
Today we started our new text - Stuck by Oliver Jeffers. We had a special delivery to our class this morning. We received a letter and a box. The letter asked us to unscramble some sentences. Once this was completed the children looked in the box to find a tree, some images, some glasses and a book. The children put on their 'super star reading glasses' to help them during our shared read and we put the images on the tree to remind us what was already stuck.
This week in Year 1 it is all about The Commonwealth Games and Australia!
Yesterday we made hot cross buns which we enjoyed a lot. They smelt delicious!
Today we planted some trees in our school field. The children really enjoyed themselves!
This week we have focused on doubling in maths. We have used mirrors, paint, hoops and bean bags to help us learn. We even made double biscuits. We know that doubling means that we add the same number together and doing that is the same as multiplying by 2. Year 1 are so clever!
Today we met Dom Colon, a local author who had come to the library to read one of his stories. The Children had lots of fun and some were even picked to help him read his book!
Year One acting out the story of Little Red Riding Hood!
I have just come across a TV programme on CBeebies called 'Alphablocks'. It is a 5 minute programme that can be accessed through the BBC iplayer, the CBeebies website or youtube. It clearly demonstrates segmenting and blending of CCVC CVC and CCCVC words, the correct pronunciation of the sounds and sounds across all phases. There is also a CBeebies BBC magazine on sale which has an 'Alphablocks' focus which went on sale last Monday. It might be useful for your children.
Below is a link to the 'Alphablocks' programme.
A big well done to all Year One children for a fantastic week of performances. You were fantastic in the school nativity and confidently told the story of the Christingle today during our assembly. Well done super stars!
Miss Tyrer and Mrs Thompson.
Today we made Christingle's in preparation for our assembly.
Today we explored the season of winter by playing in a very thin layer of snow and ice!
We had lots of showing off our Christmas jumpers today whilst listening to a few Christmas songs!
We have had a lovely afternoon at Clayton Brook Library today. We listened very carefully to two stories and then we chose a book to take home.
Today we have been looking at fractions. We have had lots of fun discovering what half is using sweets.
We had so much fun celebrating Children in Need. We had our own clothes day and bought some cakes to help raise money for those less fortunate.
This week we have been working scientifically. We have focused on some Roald Dahl books (Georges Marvellous Medicine and The BFG) to help us. We have been completing lots of experiments. To do this we have undertaken special roles such as equipment officer, record keeper, supervisor, health and safety officer and photographer. We have asked lots of scientific questions, predicted the outcome of experiments, observed changes and shared lots of ideas.
Today we made dream jars and investigated what would happen if we mixed oil and water together. See the pictures to find out what happened.
If you would like to do this at home click on the link below. I would love to see the results!
